Most families have some scandal somewhere in their history. This is certainly true of the family descended from Abraham in Genesis. Most of the rest of the book will focus on God's providence for His people through one son in the 4th generation, Joseph. But today's passage turns to another son, Judah. It's a dark and scandalous chapter. We will see the judgment of the Lord but we will also see His grace. He gives sons to extend the line of Judah and ultimately gives His Son, the Lion of Judah.
