Even though Abram is counted righteous in the previous chapter, in chapter 16 Abram and Sarai grow impatient and their faith waivers. They attempt to fulfill God's promise of an offspring in their own way. Forced to be a part of their plan, Hagar runs away from Sarai's abuse. The Lord hears Hagar's cries, shows her compassion, and makes a promise to her. Hagar declares that the Lord sees her and returns to Abram and Sarai and gives birth to Ishmael.
